Yes, the martini is indeed a cocktail, but I've decided to feature the martini recipes in a separate section of this site. I'm not a "martini snob", or a purist so you'll also find the Gibsons in this section too.
And speaking snobbery and purists...Would you like that martini shaken or stirred?
Traditionally, martinis are stirred, so not to bruise the gin. However, when people started making "Vodka Martinis", they broke tradition and along with that came the practice of shaking martinis.
One of the reasons for shaking Vodka Martinis is because by shaking with ice you make your vodka martini nice and cold, which is the way vodka should be. The other reason is that some people feel it tastes better if you do. I would tend to agree.
Then of course, there's James Bond who prefers his martini shaken, not stirred. But he's a little unique in that he also has both Gin and Vodka along with the Vermouth.
Mix your martini any which way you prefer. As for the recipes here, I'll recommend stirring for the gin based martinis and shaking for the vodka based ones.
